HOW DO I DO IT?

PROCESS

When you think of glass, you envision shiny material. Transparent and translucent. Yet glass has many more technical applications. It is interesting to use and show the great diversity of glass. Working with glass and blowing it is basically universal. The technical challenge of the different techniques particularly attracts me.

HOW DO I DO IT?

However, there are many techniques for blowing and working glass. I find it interesting to approach old techniques in a new way. It is interesting to study the ancient knowledge, technique and skills, look at them and then apply them myself. For example, I work with an Italian filigree method, but I have also found my own style in that. To me, working with glass also means working with layers. Blowing glass is not just blowing. It also means, for example, cooling down to the right moment, cutting open carefully and precisely, working with skill and consideration… For me, blowing glass means in a broad sense applying old methods and techniques, but I have given them my own twist. Time and again to see how far you can go. Always searching for the limits of the material and your own abilities. That is my passion and that is what I do. As a craft, as a skill, as an artist.

Technique

Working with glass but creating the illusion that it is not glass. I worked out this technique during my years at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and made it my own. Blowing glass therefore also means to me that I work with my own recipes. I apply different minerals and search for possibilities and a multitude of effects. I also blow in other materials.

But I have also devised a technique whereby I create a different atmosphere, for example by working with more gas and less air. You then get a different way of heating. The result is that you realize a different process and obtain a different end product. For me the challenge lies in the process, in the technique itself. And the material also appeals to me, always going a step further. The material takes me along and challenges me continuously. My native soil and culture, interest in nature and social aspects are a continuous source of inspiration.
